Diver suffers lacerations to buttocks

(adapted from iol, 26 February 2006)

A Western Cape diver suffered severe lacerations to his buttocks when a boat was steered over him on Saturday, Sea Rescue said.

The man, 71, was airlifted to hospital in a stable condition, after a fisherman on a canoe pulled him to safety, spokesperson Craig Lambinon said.

It is believed the driver of the boat did not see the man in the water at the time of the accident in Melkbosstrand.

The man and two other divers were spear fishing when the incident occurred at around 11am, Lambinon said.

"The NSRI recommends that divers make themselves as visible as possible to boaters when diving off-shore and orange marker buoys are recommended to mark the divers' position while diving." - Sapa
